China and the United States will hold deputy-level talks between their finance officials on Friday to discuss debt and other issues on the sidelines of a G20 finance meeting in India, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday, before a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors near Bengaluru, that communication between China and the United States was crucial for “the sake of the entire globe”.
One of the sources, both of whom refused to be identified as they were not allowed to speak to the media, said an array of multilateral issues would be discussed at the Friday meeting, including debt.
A U.S Treasury spokesperson would not comment when asked about the planned meeting. China’s Ministry of Finance and its central bank did not promptly reply to a request seeking comment.
The United States has continually condemned China over what it regards as “foot-dragging” on debt relief for dozens of low-and middle-income nations including Sri Lanka.
