Ubisoft is expected to drop NFTs to PC players on the Tezos blockchain on December 9 starting with Ghost Recon Breakpoint. The French video game publisher introduced its first foray into nonfungible tokens (NFTs) through a new platform that is known as Ubisoft Quartz. It will launch in beta on Ubisoft Connect.

Based on a statement shared on the Ubisoft website, the participants can get collectible pieces of Ubisoft game worlds known as Digits that are:
“The first NFTs playable in AAA games and running on energy-efficient technology.”
Digits like in-game weapons or vehicles will be released in limited editions and quantities that will be rewarded to the early adopters for free on December 9, 12, and 15 in Canada and the US. Quartz will also be available in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Spain, France, and Australia.
Interestingly, Ubisoft Quartz’ energy-efficient technology is mainly leveraged on the proof-of-stake blockchain Tezos. Ubisoft’s blockchain technical director, Didier Genevois, expressed the firm’s commitment to mitigating its global footprint in an official interview that was published on the corporate site:
Buy Crypto Now“This type of blockchain achieves the same results while using significantly less energy than proof-of-work protocols. To give you an idea, a transaction on Tezos is equivalent to 30 seconds of video streaming, while on Bitcoin, it is equivalent to watching one year straight of video streaming!”

But previously, Ubisoft partnered with Ultra, a distribution platform, to leverage its games on the UOS blockchain. Ubisoft is yet to comment on this issue.
During the same interview with Genevois, Baptiste Chardon, the Ubisoft blockchain product director, added his thoughts on gaming and NFTs:
“This new approach can even, on a longer term, open up new opportunities such as interoperability between games. […] We see blockchain as a means of placing back into the hands of players and creators the value they generate through their engagement with their games.”
Today, Ubisoft ranks among the top 25 biggest gaming firms globally in terms of market capitalization, hovering at more than $5.8 billion. Significantly, a AAA gaming firm is championing blockchain when other firms like Valve have now removed blockchain games from their marketplaces.
