Triton is the largest of Neptune’s 14 moons, at about 1,680 miles (2,700 kilometers) across.
Triton’s crust is composed of frozen nitrogen ice over a core of rock and metal.
The orbit of Triton is highly inclined, and it moves in the opposite direction as most other bodies in the solar system.
As Triton has only a trace of atmosphere, there is no weather. Neptune would appear about 10 times larger in the sky of Triton than the moon looks in the sky of Earth.
Triton’s gravity is about 8 percent that of the Earth, or half that of the moon. The average surface temperature on Triton is minus 391 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 235 degrees Celsius). Triton is so far away that a radio signal would take 4 hours to reach it from Earth.
