As the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States approaches 4 million, more and more states are requiring citizens to wear a mask in public spaces to limit the spread of the coronavirus. While the White House is still avoiding a nationwide mask mandate, President Trump offered his strongest endorsement of masks over a week ago. “When you can, use a mask,” he said at a press briefing on Monday. “I view it this way: Anything that potentially can help, and that certainly can potentially help, is a good thing. I have no problem. I carry it. I wear it.“

In a complete reversal of his previous stance, he later tweeted a picture of himself wearing a mask, saying “many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can’t socially distance. There is nobody more Patriotic than me.” Despite mixed messages from the president, the vast majority Of Americans have adopted the wearing of masks in public as one of the easiest ways to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. According to continuous polling by YouGov and the Imperial College London, 78 percent of U.S. adults said they’d wear a mask in public in the middle of July, up from around 30 percent in early April and less than 10 percent in early March.
