Mitt Romney is in the news again, for all the wrong reasons though. Through his anti-Trump speech (Transcript of Mitt Romney’s Speech on Donald Trump) on a critical day of the 2016 campaign, Romney has not only diminished himself as a politician, but also demonstrated how ungrateful a person he is, given how Trump endorsed him in 2012.
Romney is no longer relevant in American politics. But his 2012 campaign still is. So let me compare it with Trump’s campaign …
1. Romney’s 2012 campaign
I supported him, wholeheartedly. Five publications on the record:
- An Open Letter to Mitt Romney
- Mitt Romney vs. Deng Xiaoping
- America: Let The Rich Run The Country Like China Does
- Top-10 American Misconceptions about Mitt Romney
- Another Open Letter to Mitt Romney.
But in the end he failed!
2. Trump’s 2016 campaign
I still think Governor John Kasich is the best GOP candidate, because he not only has the best chance to defeat the Democratic opponent in the general election, but also can actually govern as the President.
Unfortunately, Governor Kasich failed to gain any traction through Super Tuesday. So I endorsed Donald Trump, my second choice, instead. For more, read: Okay, It’s Donald Trump!
3. 2012 vs. 2016
Theoretically, Romney looked like a better candidate than Trump for three main reasons:
- Romney was successful in both the private and public sectors, while Trump has not served in the public sector.
- Romney served as a state governor, which I think is a critical requirement for the Presidency (Solution for America (Version 3)).
- Romney obviously acted more presidential, especially with regard to political correctness, than the occasionally outrageous Trump!
Practically, Trump is far better than Romney for three main reasons:
- Trump knows America far better. For example, Trump’s messages (e.g. jobs and illegal immigration) hit the core. In contrast, Romney flip-flopped on several key issues (e.g. healthcare).
- Trump is a far better communicator. Trump communicates in simple, funny, and easily understandable terms. As a result, Trump means high ratings!
- Trump acts better, thanks to his years of experience with reality TV! No question, Trump has made mistakes. However, some mistakes (e.g. torture), I suspect, were intentionally made, because they are crowd-pleasing, clearly wrong but easily correctable, with little consequence. Others (e.g. on race and Muslims) were made to secure his GOP nomination, which, I am afraid, will cost votes in the general election (hopefully not many). In contrast, Romney made some “fatal” mistakes (e.g. the remark of the 47%).
Most importantly, timing! Although Trump (born 6/14/1946) is slightly older than Romney (born 3/12/1947), Romney chose to run for the President in 2008 and 2012, without success. Trump, on the other hand, talked about running for a long time, but actually committed this time only. His campaign looks more and more promising as the clock ticks …
4. Closing
Unusual times require unusual measures. Trump may be exactly what America desperately needs today. So get on the Trump train or get out of the way!
