Norway’s central bank has made the source code for its central bank digital currency (CBDC) sandbox publicly available and confirmed that the prototype network for the project is based on Ethereum technology.
Having started by outlining its plans to test several CBDC technical options in 2021, in May Norges Bank introduced vendor Nahmii to help with its sandbox project. Today, the open source code has been made available on GitHub, supporting the testing of basic token management use cases, including burning, minting, and transferring ERC-20 tokens.
Apart from deploying the ideal smart contracts and access controls, the Norges Bank sandbox includes custom frontend and network monitoring tools. The Sandbox network appears to sit behind basic validation and is just accessible by the users who have the authorized credentials, which means transactions are private.
