In the recent reports, Jay-Z has partnered with Jack Dorsey to launch a free bitcoin education academy in the Brooklyn public housing complex in the neighborhood where the rapper grew up. The Bitcoin Academy is inviting all residents of Marcy Houses to attend the free in-person and online classes between June and September.
This program “aims to provide education, and empower the community with knowledge,” according to the academy website, eliminating some of the barriers to accessing knowledge about finance and bitcoin more generally.
Najah J Roberts from Crypto Blockchain Plug and Lamar Wilson from Black Bitcoin Billionaire has been hired as the course instructors.
Dorsey and Jay-Z are funding this academy through personal grants. Both are long-time crypto enthusiasts and partnered last year on a 500 BTC investment aimed at developing Bitcoin’s popularity in Africa and India.
Buy Bitcoin NowIn a tweet, Jay-Z said that the primary goal is to “provide people tools to build independence for themselves and then the community around them”.
Shout out to @Jack. #Bitcoin Academy, starting in Marcy, a place that taught me so much, is hopefully the first of many. The simple goal is to provide people tools to build independence for themselves and then the community around them. https://t.co/4uHkCfdFZv

Nonetheless, this initiative has encountered blowback on social media, with most people questioning the wisdom of encouraging people to adopt a currency infamous for its scams and volatility.
