Econintersect: All those who followed the 2014 Winter Olympics know that host Russia captured the most medals (33) and the U.S. was second (28). Norway was third with 26 total medals. But on the “Real Medals Ranking List” Norway was the runaway winner with Slovenia second. Both countries have more than double the “Real Medal Count” of third place Austria.

Econintersect has prepared the following ranking table normalized to population. The divisor used was the number of 100 million units in each country’s population. For example, the divisor for Russia was 1.407 since Russia has 140.7 million people.
USA Today came up with a different way of ranking by dividing the number of medals won for each country divided by the number of athletes representing that country.
