Econintersect: Asia/Pacific stocks strengthened late in the day Thursday, March 17, to close mixed. As GEI reported previously, at midday all eleven major far east markets had been down. By the close Malaysia was essentially unchanged for the day, Taiwan had gained 0.5% and three markets (Sydney, New Zealand and Seoul) each advanced by 0.1%.The seven declining markets lost far more than the advancers. Hong Kong lost 1.9% and both Tokyo and Jakarta were down by 1.4%. Mumbai (Bombay) declined 1.2%, Singapore lost 1% and Taiwan lost 0.5%. Every market improved from midday.
