Econintersect: Marshall Auerback conducted a recent interview with Professor Matheus Grasselli, Deputy Director of the Fields Institute (Toronto, Canada). Grasselli purports that the bad reputation of mathematics applied to economics derives from the simplistic forms of mathematics used by many economists. He refers to what is often used as “Victorian mathematics.”
Prof. Grasselli says that mathematics should be used more to determine what is unexpected or even wrong in a model many times rather than to try to support the model. The interview, entitled “How Advanced Mathematics Can Support New Economic Thinking” is 16 minutes long.
