When you treat yourself by grabbing a fruity soft drink from the fridge you expect it to contain fruit juice, right? Not just juice, but more than 4 or 5 percent… right?
Thankfully some drinks do exactly what they say on the tin. Appletiser is made from concentrated, carbonated apple juice – and nothing else. Fentimans’ Mandarin & Seville Orange boasts 58% juice and a handful of other, natural ingredients. San Pellegrino’s Orange and Lemon contain 20% and 18% juice, respectively, alongside a few natural flavorings and preservatives.
But some drinks might surprise you.
Make lemonade at home and you’re probably going to use about a cup of lemon juice, diluted with water and sugar. And that’s it.
Why then do some commercial brands contain as little as 2% lemon juice, and a whole host of additives and artificial flavorings like Saccharin, Acesulfame K and Aspartame?
If that doesn’t shock you, how about fruity flavored drinks that contain precisely NO fruit juice at all? Yep, that’s 0% juice in products that have been engineered to remind you of nature but have absolutely no relationship to the real thing.
