With restrictions gradually lifted, borders and businesses reopening and a hint of normalcy returning to people’s lives in many countries, it’s tempting to feel like the worst is over six months into the pandemic. And while few countries are currently overwhelmed by COVID-19 like Italy, Spain or the U.S. were earlier this year, global infections are still at a very high level, hovering around 250,000 per day for the past six weeks.

According to the World Health Organization, daily new cases hit a new high of 307,299 just five days ago on September 6, with India (90,632), Brazil (51,194), the United States (49,131), Argentina (10,684) and Spain (9,864) accounting for more than two thirds of newly confirmed cases that day. While the high number of new cases is partly due to a steep increase in testing, particularly in the U.S. and India, where more than 90 and 50 million tests have been performed, respectively, it still shows that COVID-19 remains highly prevalent around the world.
As of September 10, more than 28 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed worldwide, resulting in more than 900,000 deaths. As the following chart shows, the pandemic is far from over yet, even if many countries appear to have the situation under control at the moment.
