In another testament to Marvel’s incredibly successful streak at the box office, “Avengers: Endgame” overtook “Avatar” to become the highest-grossing movie of all time this weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the latest installment of the popular Avengers series grossed $2.79 billion at the box office worldwide, just edging past James Cameron’s “Avatar”, which had been the number 1 film since it rang in the 3D era in 2009.

It should be noted however, that the ranking shown in the chart below is not adjusted for inflation and thus heavily favors recent releases over past blockbusters. While “Avatar” and “Titanic” are the only films not released in the past decade to feature in the top 10 of the unadjusted ranking, the adjusted ranking (only available for the North American box office unfortunately) features classics such as “Gone with the Wind”, the original “Star Wars” and “The Sound of Music”.
