Little more than a year after giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia, Serena Williams reached the final of the US Open with a convincing win over Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova.

Saturday’s final was Williams’ second consecutive Grand Slam final, her ninth US Open final and another chance at winning her first major title as a mother. But that was not to be.
Williams played Japan’s Naomi Osaka on Saturday, who spoiled an all-American final by beating Madison Keys in the second semi-final. Serena Williams would have improved her own record to 24 Grand Slam titles, widening a gap on second-placed Steffi Graf who won 22 major titles during her career.
Winning a Grand Slam title as a mother would certainly have been of special significance to Williams, who has been very outspoken about the difficulties of balancing parenthood and the life of a professional athlete. Even with Saturday’s defeat, there’s little doubt that she will be remembered as the best among the greatest.
