The existence of other major homid species in addition to Neanderthals and homo sapiens may occupy a much more recent history (100,000 to 300,000 years ago) than the 500,000 years ago or more that has been previously thought. The development of modern humans may be much more complicated than was thought as recently as the turn of the 21st century.
