A multitude of studies have shown that diversity can be a tremendous asset to companies with more diverse teams resulting in better financial results. Considering its importance, Statista and Forbes worked together to compile a list of America’s best employers for diversity.
That involved surveying 30,000 employees in the U.S. in August 2017 and examining the share of women filling top executive teams and boards. It also looked at whether companies have a department or position that promotes diversity. Such positions are becoming increasingly common with Uber just recently announcing it had hired its very first diversity and inclusion officer following the recommendations of an inquiry into its company culture led by former attorney general Eric H. Holder Jr.
Investment management firm Northern Trust also has a senior executive position entitled Director of Global Diversity & Inclusion and according to its website, the company considers a globally diverse and inclusive workforce a fundamental strength. It came first in the Statista and Forbes ranking, ahead of The Smithsonian Institution. Levy Restaurants came third and is particularly noteworthy as women make up 56.5 percent of its entire workforce while accounting for 43 percent of its management positions. Women also make up half of its eight-person executive team. You can browse the full ranking on Forbes here.
