Gun Massacres in America (Version 3)

Another gun massacre in America (At least 59 killed in Las Vegas shooting rampage, more than 500 others injured); another national mourning (Trump orders flags fly half-staff); another wasted opportunity with meaningless hand-wringing; another wait for the next massacre to occur – not whether, but when and where in America; perhaps if it will even set another new record in terms of the number of total deaths!

America is failing because the government cannot protect its own people from being massacred at home!

1. Guns

There are many bad people, including mentally disturbed, in all countries around the world. But they cause most damage in America for one main reason: the wide availability of guns, especially the assault weapons.

2. Gun control

Remember President Reagan?

Even Bernie Sanders got this one right (Bernie Sanders calls automatic weapons ban after Orlando mass shooting)!

But will America listen? No! Why not? Guns to America are like bread and butter to mankind!

3. America

At the top level, a government has two main jobs:

1. At home: Maintaining law and order, with the most important duty being protecting the lives of its citizens.
2. Abroad: Diplomacy and defense.

While we spend a lot of money on defense to protect America from foreign hostile forces, we are failing at home to protect Americans from being massacred by Americans!

Why is that?

Some blame the NRA. More blame big money in politics. I blame democracy, as we practice it today! For more, read my recent book (American Democracy).

4. Las Vegas vs. Chicago

There has been too much invalid comparison, especially on the Internet, between the Las Vegas shooting & Chicago shootings.

I have been living in Chicagoland for the past 24 years. So let me explain … The Vegas shooting and Chicago shootings are fundamentally different! The former was massive killings of a large number of innocent people, while the latter was often gang-related and targeted at 1 or 2 individuals, although occasionally some innocent people were caught (aka “wrong place & wrong time”).

Now, the gun laws … Yes, Chicago does have very strict gun laws, but Indiana is the least strict. The distance between Chicago & Indiana is only 30 minutes by car! The shooters are often too dumb to go to Indiana. But you have smart dealers who buy from Indiana in large quantity, legally, and then sell them in street corners in Chicago, illegally. So gun laws, if any, should be nation-wide.

The real cause behind Chicago shootings is poverty and moral decay, for which you have to go all the way back to LBJ’s “Great Society”. For more, read: Civil Rights Act: 50 Years Later.

5. Closing

As a country, we have proven, over the past few decades at least, to be incapable of solving any real big problems. “Gun massacres in America” will be no exception. The situation must get much worse than now before we could possibly hope for a real solution. Meanwhile, a lot more Americans will die, unfortunately …
