The internet has an alarming level of nastiness, whether it’s in the comments below the news article you just clicked or the discussion beneath your favorite YouTube video.

The glaring lack decency on the internet prompted Wired to team up with commenting platform Disqus to uncover America’s strongholds of online hatred.

In order to keep track of the trolling, Disqus analyzed 92 million comments over 16 months, written by nearly 2 million authors on more than 7,000 forums that use their software. They managed to uncover everything from the time of day trolls are most active to the worst states and cities for nasty comments.

Vermont was named the worst state for toxic comments while at city level, Park Forest Illinois was number one with 34 percent of all its comments classified as hostile. The research notes that 99 percent of them came from just two individuals so taking that into account, the following infographic only deals with major cities. It puts Las Vegas in first place with 12.1 percent of all its comments deemed hateful. New York City comes in fifth with toxic comments accounting for 9.6 percent of its total while San Francisco’s toxic comment quota only came to 6.1 percent.
