At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (or E3) taking place in Los Angeles this week, the video game industry is flexing its muscles, showing off what the coming months will have in store for gamers around the world.

Both hardware makers such as Sony and Microsoft and game developers commonly use E3 to announce and present their latest tricks to the gaming community.
A common misconception about video games is that they are for a young, predominantly male audience only. That is far from the truth, as the following chart illustrates. According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), playing video games is neither a pastime for the youth nor is it male-dominated. Quite the opposite in fact: 1 in 4 video game players are aged 50 or older and the average gamer is 35 years old.
According to the ESA, 65 percent of American households are home to at least one person who plays video games for more than 3 hours a week.
