Econintersect: This week we review the geologic history of New York City, concentrating on Manhattan. Starting a billion years ago the story progresses through today. Dinosaurs once walked through Manhattan, then in the southern hemisphere, on their way from New Jersey to Morocco. Before that it was deep beneath water. After the time of the early dinosaurs North America separated from Africa creating the Atlantic ocean. Lava flows created the New Jersey Palisades which are now the western shore of the Hudson River opposite Manhattan’s west side.
