Brookings Institute has dug out another interesting feature of Donald Trump’s presidency, which might add to being able to explain why America is so divided.
The data provided shows that Trump is the first president of the United States (at least since 1992) who was voted into office with a minority of people living in counties that he won.
According to the estimates, 177 million Americans live in Clinton counties compared to 146 million in Trump counties. Please note that this refers to the population of all ages and not just voters in those counties. Also, compare the economic demographics of the counties won by either candidate. The popular vote versus the electoral college is also of interest in this context.
This chart shows the population residing in counties carried by respective presidential candidates (in millions).
