U.S.

  • Much of Florida under hurricane warnings as Matthew risk rises (Miami Herald, MSN News) Hurricane warnings were issued along the east coast of Florida late Tuesday as deadly and dangerous Hurricane Matthew left the Caribbean with a battered Haiti and Cuba in its wake. At 11 p.m., the National Hurricane Center upgraded hurricane watches issued earlier in the day to warnings from Golden Beach to Sebastian Inlet, a change indicating that fierce winds from the Category 4 storm could hit the coast within 36 hours, even if the storm remains off shore. Much of the Florida Keys and Miami-Dade County were placed under tropical storm warnings. Follow Sig Silber’s GEI Weather Update Reports.

  • Pence Succeeds in Debate Without Really Trying to Defend Trump (Bloomberg) Donald Trump’s weeklong slide in the presidential race started when he showed up to the first debate unprepared and spoiling for a fight. On Tuesday evening, Mike Pence helped slow it by doing the opposite.

  • Liberal pundits concede: Mike Pence won the vice presidential debate (Business Insider) A handful of liberal pundits admitted that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Donald Trump’s running mate, came out on top over Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s running mate, in Tuesday’s vice presidential debate. Syria

  • Syria conflict: Russia sends missile system to Tartus base (BBC News) Russia has confirmed it has sent an S-300 air defense missile system to its naval base in Syria’s port of Tartus. Defense ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the purpose of the system was to guarantee the security of the base from the air. The move comes amid growing tension with the West. Iraq

  • Iraq warns Turkey of ‘regional war’ if doesn’t withdraw troops (Reuters) Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi warned Turkey that keeping troops in northern Iraq could lead to a “regional war“, according to comments broadcast on state TV on Wednesday. India

  • Gold Bugs Are Watching the Wrong Central Bank (Bloomberg) It might at first seem counter-intuitive, but the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the central bank with the biggest influence on gold. India consumes up to 1/3 of the world’s gold jewelry and with RBI cutting its reference interest rate and indicating more cuts are to come, the rupee will likely devalue reducing the amount of gold consumed. It looks like that trend has already started.
