Accounting for almost 1 in 3 smartphones shipped worldwide between April and June 2016, China’s smartphone market remains the largest in the world.
Smartphone shipments in the second quarter amounted to 111.2 million units, up 4.6 percent from the previous year’s June quarter. According to IDC data, the top three vendors in China accounted for 47 percent of total shipments, as the market continued to consolidate.
Interestingly, it’s Chinese brands such as Huawei, OPPO and vivo who are dominating on their home turf, while global market leaders Samsung (not among the Top 5) and Apple (a distant fifth) are struggling to keep track in this important market. It isn’t all good news for Chinese smartphone vendors though: former market leader Xiaomi saw its sales drop by almost 40 percent as the company couldn’t keep up with their domestic competitors’ aggressive marketing efforts.
This chart shows the Top 5 smartphone vendors in China, based on unit shipments in Q2 2016.
