America: What Did Our Founding Fathers Do, Actually?

They created a republic by heavily copying Ancient Rome of more than 2,000 years ago! What does that mean? Hear me out …

1. “A republic, if you can keep it”

According to American legend, at the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, a woman stopped Benjamin Franklin as he left Independence Hall on the final day of deliberation, inquiring whether we had a republic or a monarchy.

Below is said to be Franklin’s reply.

2. Why a republic?

Our Founding Fathers surely had looked at all the options at that time, especially the following three:

  1. Monarchy: Almost all other countries were monarchies.
  2. Democracy: The most prominent example was Ancient Greece, more than 2,500 years ago.
  3. Republic: The most prominent example was Ancient Rome, more than 2,000 years ago.

They picked option 3!

2.1 Why not a monarchy?

They asked George Washington to be King, but he declined – end of story!

2.2 Why not a democracy?

Democracy was a proven failure way before 1776! Below is one example from Ancient Greece.

Below are five examples, specifically showing how lowly five of our Founding Fathers thought about democracy.

Bottom line: the word “democracy” never appears in the U.S. Constitution!

3. What a republic?

When a republic was left as the only viable option, the debates among the Founding Fathers were merely about the form of the republic. Three examples:

  1. Alexander Hamilton: an oligarchic republic.
  2. John Adams: a balanced republic that addresses both the few and the many.
  3. Thomas Jefferson: a representative republic.

Jefferson won the debate! As a result, America was built as a representative republic!

Was it a great American invention? No, not at all! As a republic, America was simply and literally a copy of the Roman Republic of more than 2,000 years ago!

4. As a republic, America was a copy of Rome!

America, at its birth, resembled Ancient Rome in five major aspects as follows:

  1. The 3-branch structure of the government.
  2. The Electoral College.
  3. A House of Representatives elected “by the People of the several States” (Constitution of the United States), where “the People” referred to some white men (e.g. property owners) only, just like the Romans did! For example, when George Washington was elected the first President in 1789, only 6% of the American population was eligible to vote! For more, read: U.S. voting rights timeline.
  4. “The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature” (Constitution of the United States), not by “the People”, just like the Romans did!
  5. The two eagles, as shown below! Do not they look alike?

5. Words of wisdoms left by the Founding Fathers

Here are four examples:

6. Discussion

Have we been listening to the Founding Fathers? Yes and No!

Yes, we have listened to them on the U.S. Constitution, changing it with new amendments. Unfortunately, some amendments are bad (Eighteenth Amendment) and some questionable (e.g. Repealing the Twenty-Six Amendment!). Worse yet, we have progressed into a full democracy (What Is American Democracy, Anyway?), which is far more extreme than Ancient Greece rejected by our Founding Fathers in the first place!

No, we did not listen to George Washington on the military. As a result, not only has America become an empire, the American Empire resembles the Roman Empire! Will the American Empire collapse like the Roman Empire? Very likely! Two informative readings:

  1. The Middle East without America?
  2. Fixing the Military-Industrial Complex!

In short, today’s America is the worst combination of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece!

7. Closing

Our Founding Fathers created America as a republic by heavily copying Ancient Rome, not Ancient Greece! Unfortunately, we have evolved into the worst combination of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece!

Is America finished? Yes, unless we soon reform our political system as I have suggested (Solution for America (Version 3))!

Give Donald Trump a chance to Make America Great Again!
