Netflix Challenges TV Heavyweights At The Emmys In Spite Of Low Subscriber Growth

When Netflix reported its second quarter earnings today, the company’s shareholders were focused on how many subscribers the world’s largest video streaming service was able to add in the United States and internationally.

Over the past few years, Netflix’s strategy to attract more subscribers has mainly focused on producing exclusive original content for its platform. And, at least according to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the company has been doing a great job with its own content.

But subscriber growth of 1.7 million fell far short of the expected 2.5 million in the second quarter in spite of the great content.

When the Academy published its list of nominees for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Netflix productions received 54 nods. Trailing only HBO and FX, Netflix is now the third most successful network in terms of Emmy nominations, leaving behind TV heavyweights such as NBC, ABC and CBS. When the company earned its first nominations in 2013, it went into the award show as a dark horse and ended up winning three awards for “House of Cards”. Over the past three years, Netflix has established itself as a household name for quality content, so when the Emmy Awards are given out later this year, the company will no longer be seated at the kid’s table.

This chart ranks networks by the number of Emmy nominations earned in 2016.
