New UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced yesterday her new cabinet.
While many had expected a ‘steady the ship’ approach, May revealed a vastly altered line-up with many high profile sackings including former Chancellor George Osborne and Justice Secretary Michael Gove.
When compared to Cameron’s last government, the main changes of note are not, as some had predicted, in gender balance but rather a large increase in ministers with a state-educated background and a decrease in those who attended Oxford or Cambridge. Crucially, there is a 9 point increase in the number of MPs who are pro-Brexit. Most notably of all, the man originally tipped to become the next Prime Minister off the back of his successful ‘Leave’ campaigning, Boris Johnson has been promoted to Foreign Secretary.
This chart shows the Brexit stance and education of members of Theresa May’s new cabinet.
