Water loss is a major problem in many large cities around the world as authorities scramble to upgrade ageing water networks to prevent leaks and boost efficiency. An OECD report focusing on water usage in 48 major cities across 17 countries found that nearly all of them (92 percent) considered infrastructure a major factor in water governance.
It was much higher in Mexico, however, with the percentage share of water loss in its capital coming to 44 percent in 2012.
Part of the explanation can primarily be attributed to unauthorized consumption, poor connections and metering inaccuracies.
