In the wake of George Osbourne’s latest budget announcements, it is perhaps a good time to look at where our taxes actually go.

Of a total 675 billion pounds of public sector expenditure in the last financial year, a quarter went on welfare. Close behind was spending on health, at 20 percent.
For those concerned about the cost of EU membership ahead of the referendum in June, the figure at the bottom of the chart will be interesting. 3.7 billion pounds of tax payers money went towards maintaining the Union budget. Although this may sounds like a large amount, it only actually accounted for 0.6 percent of the total spend. In total, the UK’s contribution to the European Union budget in 2014/2015 was 8.8 billion pounds.
This chart shows a distribution of UK public sector expenditure for 2014/2015.
