14.6 million Americans were self-employed in 2014 and they in turn provided jobs for 29.4 million others, according to Pew Research.
Those 44 million jobs represents 30 percent of the national workforce. When it comes to the industries with the most self-employed workers, agriculture, forestry and fishing comes first. 81 percent of those working in this sector are self-employed.
