U.S.

  • What are some things the outside world would be shocked to learn about the United States of America? (Quora) There is a long list of contributions (74 at my last count). Some are interesting.
  • Lawmakers Who Hailed 9/11 Heroes Still Shun Bill To Help Them (The Huffington Post) Most members of Congress had something to say about never forgetting the heroes of 9/11 as the 14th anniversary of those attacks passed Friday, but by the end of the day, only about a third of federal lawmakers had signed onto new legislation to aid those ailing responders. The old law to help those responders passed nearly five years ago. It begins expiring next month, yet legislation to extend that aid remains stuck in Congress. More than a dozen lawmakers threw their support behind the bill over the last week, but that brings the numbers to only 145 out of 435 House members and 37 of 100 senators.
  • Obama Rolls Out College Scorecard on New Federal Website (Bloomberg) The new website data does not provide a single head-to-head ranking of universities, which was part of the earlier proposal criticized by some college presidents. However, it does highlight groups of schools that do particularly well in metrics like graduation rates, cost to low-income students, and salaries of graduates.

Tens of thousands of Europeans hit the streets Saturday to show solidarity with huge numbers of refugees entering the continent, while Hungary’s premier warned leaders were “in a dream world” about the dangers posed by the influx. In London, one of dozens of events across Europe, tens of thousands demonstrated, brandishing placards reading “Open the Borders“, while in Copenhagen some 30,000 took to the streets.
