The top of today’s reading list is a widely debated article that maintains that deficits don’t matter …….. and the last article is about a screen at AAII that has far outperformed the market over all time periods reported.
- Why Deficits Don’t Matter (Bob Veres, Advisor Perspectives) It isn’t stated clearly in this otherwise fine article that deficits don’t matter unless you continue them when there is no economic need.
- Verizon’s Dividends Shine: So Why Are Investors Worried? (Anthea Mitchell, Wall St. Cheat Sheet)
- My Five-Point Plan for Fixing Everything (Matthew Yglesias, Slate) Read it. It’s short and to the point … err, five points.
- Asset Allocation: If You Can’t Be Right, Be Consistent (Allan S. Roth, Financial Planning)
- An Attractive European ETF for Intrepid Investors (Alex Bryan, Morningstar Advisor)
- 3 ETFs to Watch This Week (Dion’s Fidelity Independent Advisor)
- The Part-Time Employment Story: Fact Versus Fiction (Doug Short, Advisor Perspectives dshort.com) This is a great demonstration of an error that can be made by confusing correlation with causation. (Note: Doug does not do this, merely supplies a chart which others could use improperly.) Someone could incorrectly state that this graph proves that Obamacare reduces part-time employment – the very month Obamacare was signed into law part-time employment started dropping and has continued to decline slowly for more than three years since. (Many have postulated that Obamacare is increasing part-time employment which is obviously not supported by this graph.) Read the article, Doug goes into the question in great detail. See also Steven Hansen analysis of part-time employment in August 2013.
- Fed Seen Avoiding Historic Loss by Holding Mortgage Debt (Joshua Zumbrun, Bloomberg) A solution to potential losses for The Fed when it sells securities to unwind its balance sheet may be as simple as never selling securities, but just holding to maturity.
- Why is Antarctic sea ice growing? (Houses and Holes, Macro Business) There appear to be no simple answers as to why the winter of 2012 set an all-time recrd for the extent of sea ice around Anarctica and 2013 broke that record.
- Value on the Move–PEG With Est Growth Screen (AAII) This has more than doubled the return of the S&P 500 over all four time intervals reported. Membership required to read full article.
