The year 2011 marked the largest spike in tornadoe related deaths and injuries in the United States since the 1930’s. There were 1,704 confirmed tornadoes that killed 553 people during 2011. This includes 158 deaths from the category EF5 tornado that struck Joplin, Mo., on May 22. The Joplin tornado is the deadliest since modern record-keeping began in 1950.
