Econintersect: Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) chairman Eric Schmidt claims there there are now 1.5 million new Android devices activated every single day. That number totals more than 10 million new smartphones, tablets, etc. coming on line every week and extrapolates to more than 500 million per year. With about 750 million devices active at the moment, there will be over 1 billion android devices active worldwide by the end of the year. Schmidt provided this information while answering questions Tuesday (16 Tuesday 2013) at AllThingsD’s Dive Into Mobile conference in New York.
The comments by Schmidt seem to conflict with a snapshot of recent sales activity reported by GEI News.
For comparison, Apple reported sales of iphones and ipads totaling 183 million worldwide in fiscal 2012. The total sales including ipods was more than 200 million. In January Apple said that nearly 300 million iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches were then running the latest iOS 6 software (September 2012). Econintersect has not located an estimate of the total of all Apple system devices in operation. Sales projections going forward have not been found as well.
