bill gates Econintersect:  The Forbes 400 has been announced for 2011.  The list of the 400 richest people in America has many familiar faces, including Bill Gates as #1 for the 18th year in a row.  Warren Buffett, the last person to be number one before Gates, remained at #2 despite losing $6 billion in the last year.

Gates is not the richest man in the world, however.  That title goes to Mexico’s Carlos Slim with $74 billion compared to Gates $59 billion.  However, when you add the $28 billion that Gates has given away, the total of $87 billion is larger than Slim’s $74 billion.  What is not known is how much Slim has given away.Econintersect has created a table showing the categories in which the billions of wealth were created. The total count exceeds 400 because some individuals show more than one area of business activity and each was included in the tally here.
