New York Times: Discarded refrigerators, freezers and other appliances left on the curb for New York City Sanitation Dept. pick-up are being stolen.
These are not prize units, they were garbage, quite literally. Of the last 22,741 discarded appliances for which pick-up was requested, slightly more than half (11,528) were stolen before the Sanitation truck got there. Presumably a combination of high unemployment and high scrap prices are the cause. Suggestions that the mob might be involved have also been made. Read more…..
