- Mainland Chinese stocks jump amid better-than-expected industrial output, retail sales (CNBC) Asian markets had a mixed reaction to news that China and the U.S. announced they were finally set to sign off on a phase one trade agreement. Mainland Chinese stocks jumped at the close on Monday afternoon, as data showed that the country’s industrial output and retail sales rose more than expected in November. The U.S. dollar index was last down at 96.964 after seeing highs of 97.158 earlier. Oil prices declined in afternoon trade during Asian hours: Global benchmark Brent edged down to $65.15 per barrel while U.S. crude was down 0.13% at $59.98. Spot gold was little changed at $1,475.50 per ounce by 0821 GMT after prices came under some early pressure in the Asian session on initial optimism over the trade deal. U.S. gold futures fell 0.1% to $1,480.10.

- Schumer, Pushing McConnell to Negotiate, Lays Out Plan for Impeachment Trial (The New York Times) Senator Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader, presented a proposal in a letter to his Republican counterpart, Senator Mitch McConnell, in an opening move to force Republicans to negotiate over the shape and scope of the proceedings. Mr. McConnell had said last week that he was “taking my cues” from the White House, prompting Democrats to accuse him of abandoning his duty to render “impartial justice” in the trial.
- Fox News Poll: Record support for Trump impeachment (Fox News) A new high of 51 percent wants Trump impeached and removed from office, another 4 percent want him impeached but not removed, and 40 percent oppose impeachment altogether. In July, 42 percent favored impeachment and removal, while 5 percent said impeach but don’t remove him, and 45 percent opposed impeachment.

- After the U.S. and China on Friday announced progress on a trade agreement, a critical point of the deal remains in question: agricultural purchases.
- U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer China would buy at least $16 billion more agricultural goods in each of the next two years, Reuters reported.
- “That scale of purchases seems implausible and Chinese officials were reluctant to mention any specific target during their press conference,” Ting Lu, chief China economist at Nomura, and his team said in a note.
