Featured GEI columnist Frank Li has won his first U.S. ballroom dance championship at the Ohio Star Ball (Columbus, Ohio, November 19-24, 2019). Frank started dancing in 2015. He competed locally in Chicago for the first four years. Ohio 2019 was his first competition outside of Chicago, and he did remarkably well. His partner is also his instructor. Her name is Jaana Lillemagi, a 2-time Estonian national champion and the owner of My Dance Hub in Chicago.

Pictured below are two photos taken at the competition, followed by two videos. The first video shows Frank’s four competitive routines in the 4-dance finals. The second is an exhibition solo following the end of competition. Frank’s finishes in the single dance competition events (Men, ages 51-60, Smooth Closed-Silver):
– 1st in Foxtrot
– 2nd in Waltz
– 2nd in Viennese Waltz
– 3rd in Tango
The Foxtrot win produced Frank’s U.S. event championship.
