On Monday, UK MPs voted on whether to renew the country’s Continuous At Sea Deterrence (CASD), Trident.

The motion passed with a majority of 355.

While almost all of the Conservative MPs voted in line with their leader and prime minister, Theresa May, the story on the other side of the house was rather different. Jeremy Corbyn, the embattled Labour leader, a longstanding opponent of nuclear weapons, voted against renewal. The majority of his MPs voted in favour. In total, 140 votes from Labour were in favour, 47 were against and one MP abstained.

Illustrative of the discord in the party, Angela Eagle and Owen Smith, both leadership challengers at the time, voted in the opposite direction to their leader. Deputy leader , Tom Watson, also voted for renewal while outspoken Corbyn critic Hilary Benn aligned himself on the other side of the argument, too.

This chart shows a breakdown of the Labour party MP votes on the motion to renew the Trident nuclear deterrent programme in the UK.
