The federal budget deficit was $1.7 trillion in the first six months of fiscal year 2021, CBO estimates—almost $1 trillion more than the deficit recorded during the same period last year.

Total Receipts: Up by 6 Percent in the First Half of the Fiscal Year Receipts totaled $1,703 billion during the first half of fiscal year 2021, CBO estimates— $100 billion (or 6 percent) more than during the same period last year.
Outlays in the first six months of fiscal year 2021 were $3,408 billion, $1,061 billion more than they were during the same period last year, CBO estimates. The budgetary effects of federal responses to the pandemic account for many of the largest year-to-date increases.
