Econintersect: Every day our editors collect the most interesting things they find from around the internet and present a summary “reading list” which will include very brief summaries (and sometimes longer ones) of why each item has gotten our attention. Suggestions from readers for “reading list” items are gratefully reviewed, although sometimes space limits the number included.

Putin threatens crackdown on currency speculators (Kathrin Hille, Financial Times)  Hat tip to Rob Carter.  Since most of the active players against the rouble have been Russian banks does this mean Putin would nationalize the banking system?

Launch of Orion Paves the Way for NASA’s Return to Human Spaceflight (ClaraMoskowitz, Scientific American)  The world’s largest rocket, The Delta IV Hearvy launched a new generation of spacecraft Friday (05 December 2014).  The unmanned Orion capsule, which is planned to attempt manned spacefights to moon orbit and then possibly to an asteroid and even to Mars, was scheduled to do two massive earth orbits on its maiden voyage, reaching a distance from earth of 5,800 liometers (3,600 miles), the highest altitude reached by a human-rated spacecraft since Apollo 17 which was launched in December 1972.  The orbit was 15x more distant from the earth than that of the Space Station.  The capsule was scheduled to be returned to an old-style Pacific Ocean splashdown later in the day Friday.  It is olanned to be used for a U.S. return man to space by 2021, using a new launch vehicle being developed with four times the thrust of the super rocket used this time.
