Econintersect: Every day our editors collect the most interesting things they find from around the internet and present a summary “reading list” which will include very brief summaries (and sometimes longer ones) of why each item has gotten our attention. Suggestions from readers for “reading list” items are gratefully reviewed, although sometimes space limits the number included.

  • Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson Not Indicted In Michael Brown Shooting (Ryan J. Reilly, Huffington Post) After all witnesses “largely backed up” Wilson’s account of th shooting in testimony, the Ferguson Grand Jury refused to indict Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. The witnesses, like Brown, were all African-American. See Evidence supports officer’s account of shooting in Ferguson (Kimberly Kindy and Sari Horwitz, The Washington Post). The District Attorney said he would release full transcripts of the proceedings.

  • Ferguson Erupts In Protests After Darren Wilson Grand Jury Announcement (Matt Sledge and Mariah Stewart, Huffington Post) Protests included violence with smashed windows of police cars and a police station, two burned police cars and several smashed, burned and looted businesses. Police responded in full combat gear. This article did not report any shots fired but large amounts of tear gas were apparently dispensed. See also (including video): St. Louis suburb smolders after racially charged riots (Ellen Wulfhorst, Daniel Wallis and Edward McAllister, Reuters).
  • Fed To Review Its Own Oversight Of Big Banks (Rachel Stoltzfoos, The Daily Caller) The article says that “The Federal Reserve has unexpectedly announced it’s reviewing its oversight and regulation of Wall Street, to make sure bank supervisors are considering the right information when making judgments and new rules.” Econintersect: Hardly unexpected and definitely overdue in light of what has transpired with the Carmen Segarra whistleblower case. See also Internal Review Was Critical of New York Fed’s Culture (Pedro Nicolaci da Costa and Justin Baer, The Wall Street Journal).
