Apple’s new iPhone models, the high-end iPhone 5S and the mid-range iPhone 5C, are off to a great start. According to Apple, the company sold 9 million phones within the first three days after the launch of the new models on Friday.
With 9 million units sold in just three days, the new iPhone models are off to a better start than any other iPhone before them. The most obvious reason for the launch record is the simple fact that Apple had two new iPhone models to offer: the iPhone 5S and the (only slightly) cheaper iPhone 5C. Even though the 5S got the most attention from consumers, the 5C surely contributed to the 9 million figure reported by Apple.
The real star of the weekend was the new champagne-colored iPhone 5S though, which sold out immediately due to a mix of high demand and (some say deliberately) constrained supply. Especially in new iPhone modelswhere gold is immensely popular as a color that represents wealth and status, the champagne colorway proved immensely popular.
The Asian market has recently grown increasingly important to Apple and consequently, for the first time ever, the company rolled out the new iPhone models to Chinese customers on the international launch day.
Whether it was the iPhone 5C, the new colorway or the first-day availability in China, a successful launch was just what Apple needed. The company’s stock, which had taken a severe hit after the announcement of the new iPhone models earlier this month, immediately started climbing on the positive news.
