statistalogoA little more than seven months have passed since the highly anticipated release of Windows 8. Everything that happened in those seven months can only be described as a disaster for Microsoft. The ambitious re-design of the world’s leading operating system left long-time Windows users alienated, and as a consequence Windows 8 adoption has been tepid at best.

Compared to the launch of its predecessor three years ago, the start of Windows 8 looks downright catastrophic. According to research firm Net Applications, Windows 8 was used by no more than 4.3 percent of global PC users in May. By the same time three years ago, Windows 7 adoption was already three times as high.

Microsoft’s hopes now lie on the major update, code named Blue, which is due to be released later this year. If the update fails to iron out the obvious kinks in the Windows 8 user interface, the sea will get rougher for Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer.
