Econintersect: There is a top ten list at Investment News that you hope not to find your state on. The list is presented in the form of a slide show count down starting with #10 North Dakota and ending with #1. Some of the photographs alone are worth the visit to the site (link under “Source” below). However, the photograph for state #1 is guaranteed to make you think there are more reasons than high taxes to want not to live there.
To this editor’s surprise two states that he felt sure would make the list, New York and Massachusetts, are not there. That doesn’t mean they are low tax states; it simply means that they have an average rate that is less than North Dakota’s 1.42%. There is quite a jump to #9 (1.59%) but you’ll have to go to the slide show to find out what state that is. By the time you get to #1 the average tax rate is 1.89%.
The picture below accompanies the North Dakota listing but no specific information is given about this state resident’s individual tax rate.
