Econintersect: According to Chinese embassy data there were approximately 60,000 business executives from China living and working in India at the end of 2010. This represented an approximately four-fold increase since 2004. What the Chinese data does not reveal is that some of these Chinese like India so much that they would rather stay than return home. An article in The Economic Times recounts examples of how the Chinese have assimilated into the Indian culture. From The Economic Times here is an excerpt about Eric Yu, an executive with telecom equipment maker Huawei Telecommunications (India) Co Pvt Ltd., who has lived in India for seven years:
“Actually when I am in China, I feel like a stranger. I am more at home in India,” he says without missing a beat. “I feel I am part of the society here.”
Another excerpt:
Eventually, they [the Chinese] become ensconced in a society that they say embraces them unreservedly. “Indians are warm and kind,” says Shi Mingli, assistant representative of China Minmetals , who came to India in 2008.
The experience of the Chinese in India should not be a surprise. The Chinese have for centuries migrated into other parts of Asia and have become assimilated in local cultures. In India, some of the Chinese have already adopted Indian and English names as they meld into the culture.
