Econintersect: A 2006 report by Yashada.org and the State Government of Maharashtra, India researched the high suicide rate among farmers in India. This study was undertaken because of a high number of suicides in 2005-06.A high incidence of suicides again occurred in 2010, attributed at least in part to high debt levels and abuses in microfinance.
The 2006 report concluded that the causes of suicides among farmers were complex and high debt levels was only one of the reasons. Others related to low income and breakdown, and even lack of, suitable social structure. Read the entire report….
