Who Saw the Greek Crisis Coming Years Before Everyone Else Did?
Econintersect: Julie Verhage and Alex Balogh have written an article for Bloomberg in which they discuss nine people who forsaw the euro crisis years ago but were little heeded. Many on the list (who are still living) have had articles posted on GEI. The common characteristics of this group center on their view of global monetary systems from the viewpoint of accounting rules for sovereign states. And the invention of the euro was formulated by ignoring those rules.
Here is the list (chronological order):
- Margaret Thatcher (1990 autobiography)
- Wynne Godley (1992 paper)
- Arnulf Baring (1997 book)
- L. Randall Wray (1998 book)
- Matthew Forstater (1999 paper)
- Milton Friedman (2000 presentation)
- Warren Mosler (2001 essay)
- Stephanie Bell Kelton (2002 essay)
- Costas Simitis (2008 presentation)
