Why U.S. Economic Growth is Getting Harder

The formula for economic growth is clear enough: more workers, improved human capital as measured in education and experience, high levels of capital investment, and ongoing adoption of new technologies, all mixed together in a market-oriented economic environment that provides incentives for work and innovation.

BLS: Jobs Up Strongly in April 2011

With 268,000 private non-farm employment gains, it blew the socks off of all the pessimistic pundit predictions including Econintersect’s forecast of 150,000. Because an increased number of people reentered the labor force the unemployment rate actually increased to 9.0%, up from 8.8% last month. The ratio of number employed to adult civilian population remained virtually unchanged.
