A low pressure/frontal system extending from the Northern Plains to the Southwest will slowly move eastward, settling in the Upper Midwest and Central Plains Wednesday through Thursday morning. The system will produce moderate heavy snow over parts of the central Great Basin/Rockies Tuesday evening before spreading into the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Wednesday. Winter Storm Watches and Warnings are currently in effect for eastern Wyoming and western South Dakota. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico pulled northward over the Plains to the Upper Midwest will interact with the frontal boundary to produce moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms over parts of the Upper Great Lakes and Upper/Middle Mississippi Valley Wednesday into Friday morning. These thunderstorms can become severe at times, with the greatest risk for severe weather isolated to the Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri borders. A secondary cold front positioned behind the main system will draw cool air southward over the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley on Wednesday, creating the potential for freezing rain as rain changes over to snow with dropping temperatures.
Elsewhere, short wave energy associated with a low pressure center positioned off the West Coast will provide the impetus for continuous showers and thunderstorms along the coast through Thursday. This shortwave energy will also drive moderate to heavy snow over the mountain ranges of California and the Oregon/Washington Cascades Tuesday and Wednesday. Snowfall totals of 1 to 2 feet are expected over the Sierra Nevada and the northwest California coastal mountains. Winter Storm Watches and Warnings are currently in effect for portions of California. Over the Southwest and Southern Plains persistent dry conditions, exacerbated by a passing cold front Wednesday evening, combined with high winds associated with the frontal passage and a tight pressure gradient nearby will create a critical risk of fire weather throughout the period. Portions of southeast New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle, northwest Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, and southeast Colorado will be at greatest risk for fire weather and currently have Red Flag Warnings in effect.
Over the central and eastern U.S. much more mild temperatures are expected over the next few days, with high temperatures across these regions sitting on average 10 to 20 degrees above normal and reaching into 60s and 70s. The greatest departures will be likely over portions of the Central and Northern Plains as well as the Upper Mississippi Valley on Wednesday, where high temperatures could hit 30 to 40 degrees above average. On Thursday and Friday, these anomalously high temperatures will move to the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, where temperatures will sit 20 to 25 degrees above normal.

Here is a national animation of weather fronts and precipitation forecasts with four 6-hour projections of the conditions that will apply covering the next 24 hours and a second day of two 12-hour projections the second of which is the forecast for 48 hours out and to the extent it applies for 12 hours, this animation is intended to provide coverage out to 60 hours. Beyond 60 hours, additional maps are available at links provided below. The explanation for the coding used in these maps, i.e. the full legend, can be found here although it includes some symbols that are no longer shown in the graphic because they are implemented by color-coding.

– Heavy rain across portions of the Lower/Middle Mississippi Valley, the Tennessee/Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic, the Southern Appalachians and the Southeast, Mon-Tue, Mar 15-Mar 16.
– Heavy snow across portions of the Southern/Central Rockies and the Southern/Central Plains, Fri-Sat, Mar 12-Mar 13.
– Heavy snow across portions of the Northern/Central Plains and the Middle/Upper Mississippi Valley, Sat-Sun, Mar 13-Mar 14.

Detailed Summary:
The main focus for hazardous weather during the medium range period (Friday, March 12th – Tuesday, March 16th) will be across the mid-section of the country where a frontal system is forecast to become nearly stationary later this week. Warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will lift along the front to result in a multi-day heavy rain event extending from the central Plains to the Mid-Mississippi Valley beginning by about Thursday. Meanwhile, a strong upper-level low is forecast to move through the Southwest towards the stationary front across the Plains through the weekend. The increasingly vigorous dynamics ahead of the upper low will raise the possibility of severe weather in addition to the heavy rain threat over the central to southern Plains beginning on Thursday and continuing through the weekend. Current indications are that cyclogenesis is expected over the central Plains and would lead to an increasing chance for heavy snow to impact areas from the Front Range into the central High Plains Friday into Saturday.
Meanwhile ahead of this developing low pressure system, much milder than normal conditions will overspread the eastern portion of the country later this week before a cold front brings down cooler air from eastern Canada by the weekend. In contrast, daytime temperatures will be much colder than normal across the central High Plains due to high pressure set up over the Rockies. This will contribute to the heavy snow threat across the Central Plains.
In Alaska, a cold high pressure system under upper-level northwesterly flow behind an upper trough will keep temperatures much below normal for southwestern Alaska into late this week. A low pressure system moving towards the Alaska Panhandle should bring heavy snow to the mountains of the southern Panhandle while mixed rain and snow is forecast for the lower elevations. Farther west, another deep low pressure system is expected to track north into the Bering Sea during the weekend, bringing the likelihood of high winds across the western Aleutians on Saturday. As this system continues to edge eastward, blizzard conditions are forecast to impact the western portion of mainland Alaska on Sunday with snow and blowing snow under gusty south to southeasterly winds. A warming trend is forecast for the North Slope of Alaska later in the weekend into early next week but the warmth is not expected to be hazardous at this time.

The Day 3 – 7 Hazards List does not update on weekends. But it is still useful as it remains valid for the period of time it covers. Of course, all forecasts are subject to change. Mesoscale Events
The following map shows where mesoscale events are occurring or forecast. If you do not see any areas highlight on this map than there are no mesoscale events taking place or forecast. A mesoscale event is a very serious situation for a very small area and detailed information is provided for these events when they occur or are forecast. If a mesoscale event is shown, click on the map and more detail on the event will be shown.
Two different parts of the NWS issue this map and they are not always in agreement although they are pretty close. They (Norman Oklahoma and College Park Maryland) issue the alerts when they realize the need, so it is best to look on both maps and click one or both if you see areas highlighted.
This next map showing where “Headlines” have been issued for convection (and an animation of the recent movement of storms) should update and you should be able to click on to get additional details but if it does not update when you click on it, click here.

Now to our More Detailed Weather Report
This graphic is about Atmospheric Rivers i.e. thick concentrated movements of water moisture. More explanation on Atmospheric Rivers can be found by clicking here or if you want more theoretical information by clicking here. The idea is that we have now concluded that moisture often moves via narrow but deep channels in the atmosphere (especially when the source of the moisture is over water) rather than being very spread out. This raises the potential for extreme precipitation events.
500 MB Mid-Atmosphere View
The map below is the mid-atmosphere 3-Day chart rather than the surface highs and lows and weather features. In some cases, it provides a clearer less confusing picture as it shows only the major pressure gradients. This graphic auto-updates so when you look at it you will see NOAA’s latest thinking. The speed at which these troughs and ridges travel across the nation will determine the timing of weather impacts. This graphic auto-updates I think every six hours and it changes a lot. Thinking about clockwise movements around High-Pressure Systems and counterclockwise movements around Low-Pressure Systems provides a lot of information.

By having the reader click on these active situations rather than having GEI do so, you will not miss any events in which you might have an interest and which we had not noticed and the page will not get cluttered with warnings, etc that have since expired.
Our focus here is events that are likely to last in the range of six hours but there can be longer or shorter events that are addressed by the Storm Prediction Center which is the main source of the information in this article. Long-term major events like a Hurricane are more likely to be in a separate article. But that may not always be the case.
