Wonderful humanitarian Sean Turnell is collateral damage in Burmese politics. Please help get him released.
I’ve just heard that the Australian economist Sean Turnell has been detained in Burma by the military. He had been working as an advisor to the now deposed government. I don’t want to get into the politics of this conflict now, for one simple reason: if there is any human being I have met who transcends politics, it’s Sean. He is an angelic presence on this planet, someone who is motivated not by self-interest or power, but by the desire to help others. Whatever the rights and wrongs of this conflict, Sean should not be a victim of it.

These news reports detail the story well. The headline “Detained Australian brought hope to the ‘poorest people’ in Myanmar, distraught family say” might sound like hyperbole, but that is the Sean I know. This one “Australian citizen and Aung San Suu Kyi adviser Sean Turnell ‘detained’ by Myanmar’s military” might make him seem partisan, but he is not in any sense. If he is in gaol right now, Sean is probably worrying about the conditions of the other prisoners–and even of the prison warders–rather than himself.
Please do whatever you can to help here. Influence any politicians you know, spread the word on social media. Sean is an utterly selfless human being who should not be collateral damage in any political conflict.
The only tactic I can think of right now that might have some impact is for his social media profilt to go sky-high. At the moment he has 1,359 Followers on Twitter. Let’s try to bump that into the tens of thousands.
